George IV Silver Sifter Spoon, John Hawkins, 1821
Here we have a good quality George IV Sterling Silver Sifter Spoon in the traditional Fiddle pattern. The bowl of the spoon has a flat base, as you would expect at this time and the top of the stem is elegantly engraved with a crest of a running hound above the initials H S E in Old English Gothic lettering.
The sifter spoon is made in London by John Hawkins and dates to 1821. Hawkins was a specialist spoon maker who was active in London between around 1802 and the early 1830s. Although not one of the best known makers, his spoons and flatware are of consistently high quality as this sifter spoon clearly shows.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents, no damage to the pierced bowl and only the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 200 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sifter spoon is 14.2cm / 5.6ins long and weighs a very respectable 39.8g / 1.4oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and very clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter f for 1821, the George III duty mark and the I.H makers' mark for John Hawkins. Although George IV became king in 1820 the silver duty mark wasn't changed until the latter part of 1821, hence why this still has the George III mark.
