This is an elegant George III Sterling Silver Salt Shovel in the Hanoverian pattern. The shovel has a gilt bowl and there are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The salt shovel was made in London by silversmith Robert Sallam and dates to between 1765 and around 1775. Robert Sallam registered his mark at Goldsmith’s Hall in London in 1765. There is not a lot of information available about him but he was a specialist spoon maker and was active through until the mid-1770s.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just a small amount of rubbing to the gilding in the bowl from many years of polishing, plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after around 250 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The salt shovel is 8.8cm / 3.4ins long and weighs in at 6.7g / 0.23oz of solid Sterling Silver.

At the time of manufacture, spoons were bottom marked, which meant they were stamped by the assay office and then hammered back into shape by the silversmith, which distorted the marks. Condiment spoons were only stamped with the lion passant for Sterling Silver and the makers' mark, in this case R S for Robert Sallam, both of which are present but somewhat distorted.
