Garrard & Co Britannia Silver Condiment Set, 1979

Here we have a superb quality high grade Britannia Silver large 3 piece Condiment Set in its original case. The set is made by world famous silversmiths Garrard & Co in London and dates to 1979. Garrard & Co were responsible for the upkeep of the Crown Jewels from 1843 to 2007 and have made many famous sporting trophies including the Americas Cup and the ICC Cricket World Cup.
Britannia Silver is 958/1000 grade silver as compared to the more common Sterling Silver, which is 925/1000. It was the compulsory standard in Britain for a short period between 1697 and 1720 and has remained an optional standard thereafter. It is rarely used and generally kept for pieces of very high quality or status.
This three piece set features a round open salt, a round mustard pot and a tall baluster shape pepper shaker all with gadrooned rims. These three pieces are all in Britannia silver and the salt and mustard are complete with their blue glass liners. Unfortunately the original spoons have been lost at some point but they have been replaced with a top quality pair of very stylish Art Deco condiment spoons in Sterling Silver by William Hutton & Sons, which date to 1930.
Condition is very good with just one truly tiny ding on the side of the pepper shaker and the superficial surface wear from regular use. The blue glass liners have no chips or cracks. The two condiment spoons are in excellent condition and compliment the set very well, despite being considerably older. The box is in generally good condition with just a small scratch to the top of the lid on the lower right hand side. The brass hinges and clasps work perfectly but are showing a few signs of age.
The salt is 7cm / 2.75" in diameter across the top and stands 4cm / 1.5" high. The mustard pot is also 7cm / 2.75" in diameter and stands 5.5cm / 2.75" high to the top of the finial. The pepper shaker is 4cm / 1.5" in diameter at its widest point and stands 10.8cm / 4.25" high. The weight of the three Britannia Silver items is a very substantial 258.7g / 9.1oz.
The two Sterling Silver condiment spoons are 8.7cm / 3.4" long and the pair together weigh 11.3g / 0.4oz.
The hallmarks on the base of each piece are well struck and clear to read. They show the Britannia mark, for 958 grade Britannia Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter "E" for 1979 and the distinctive G & Co Ld in a triangle makers' mark for Garrard & Co Ltd.
The hallmarks on the underside of the bowls of the spoons are also clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter "n" for 1930 and the equally distinctive W H & Ss Ld makers' mark for William Hutton & Sons Ltd.
This is a truly exceptional set of the very highest quality.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery Parcel Post, which includes cover for the cost of the set.
