Edwardian Silver Vesta Case, Sydney & Co, 1908
This is a well made Edwardian Sterling Silver Vesta Case. The vesta is oblong with a hinged lid. It has a striped engine turned pattern to back and front and a blank circular cartouche on the front. The interior is gilded.
The vesta case was made by silversmiths Sydney & Co and assayed in Chester in 1908. Sydney & Co was founded by Judah, Albert & Lionel Ahronsberg in around 1900 at premises in Powell Street in Birmingham. The firm registered marks in both Birmingham and Chester, produced an extensive range of small silverware for personal and domestic use and also made a range of trophy cups. The firm was very successful and remained in business until around the mid 1970s.
Condition is good with just a few tiny dings around the edge, only to be expected when an item has spent most of its life in a pocket or handbag for over 115 years. The hinge is in full working order and the lid snaps shut securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The vesta case is 4.7cm / 1.8ins high, 3.3cm / 1.3ins wide and 0.8cm / 0.31ins deep. It weighs in at a respectable 24.1g / 0.85oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside rim, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter H for 1908 and the S & Co makers' mark for Sydney & Co. There is a second partial set on the outside of the lid at the front.
