Edwardian Silver Vesta Case, John Rose, 1902

This is an elegant Edwardian Sterling Silver Vesta Case. The oblong case is finely engraved to back and front with an ivy leaf pattern and has a blank cartouche at the front. The small size and intricate decoration suggest that this was intended for a lady. Ivy was a symbol of loyalty and fidelity and often featured on gifts from a husband to a wife in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The vesta case was made in Birmingham by John Rose and dates to 1902. John Rose founded his firm at Hockley Street in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter in 1900. The business quickly became successful and produced a wide range of silverware, particularly smoking accessories and tableware. The company remained in business into the late 1970s.
Condition is very good with just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 120 years of good service. The hinge is in full working order and the lid snaps shut securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The vesta case is 4.5cm / 1.8ins from ring to strike, 2.5cm / 0.98ins wide and 0.8cm / 0.31ins deep. It weighs in at 12.8g / 0.45oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside rim of the body, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter c for 1902 and the J R makers' mark for John Rose.
