Edwardian Silver Toast Rack, James Dixon, 1901
Here we have a heavy Edwardian Sterling Silver Four Slice Toast Rack in the Gothic style. The toast rack has a rectangular base with angular scalloped ends and stands on four bracket feet. The dividers are shaped as Gothic arches and the finger ring handle is leaf shaped.
The toast rack was made in Sheffield by well known silversmiths James Dixon & Sons and dates to 1901. With a history dating back to around 1806 when it was a partnership between James Dixon and Thomas Smith, James Dixon & Sons was one of Sheffield's foremost silversmiths and electroplaters, particularly noted for their relationship with designer Dr Christopher Dresser whose groundbreaking silver plate teapot designs for the company are still being reproduced today. They were highly successful and remained in business up until the mid 1980s when they were absorbed into British Silverware.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The toast rack is made from a good heavy gauge of silver. It measures 7.8cm / 3ins by 6.3cm / 2.5ins and stands 11.4cm / 4.5ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 114.6g / 4oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter II for 1901 and the J.D & S makers' mark for James Dixon & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the toast rack.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
