Edwardian Silver Photo Frame, Henry Matthews, 1902
Here we have a beautiful Edwardian Sterling Silver Photo Frame with a Heart Shape picture window giving a visible picture size of 4.75ins high and 3.75ins across. The easel back frame is decorated with a reed, scroll and flower pattern and the heart shaped glass inside the frame is bevelled, always a sign of good quality. The cartouche at the top of the frame is blank.
The photo frame was made in Birmingham by the noted silversmith Hanry Matthews and dates to 1902. Henry Matthews registered his mark in 1893 and ran his firm from premises in Vittoria Street in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter. He made a very wide range of good quality silverware and remained in business up until around 1930.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents in the silver front, just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of use. The purple velvet backing has become somewhat worn as you would anticipate but the hinges on the strut and the back are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The frame is 18.5cm / 7.3ins high by 13cm / 5.1ins across and stands 10.5cm / 4.1ins deep with the strut full extended. It weighs in at 270.8g / 9.5oz.
The hallmarks, to the left of centre at the bottom of the frame, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter c for 1902 and the H M makers' mark for Henry Matthews.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the frame.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
