Edwardian Silver Jam Spoon, James Deakin, 1903
This is an attractive Edwardian Sterling Silver Jam Spoon in the King's Shell pattern with a decorated bowl. King's Shell is a simplified form of the popularn King's pattern with a shell finial to front and back and a thread around the stem. The broad bowl is engraved and embossed with a scroll and flower pattern.
The spoon was made in Sheffield by silversmiths James Deakin & Sons and dates to 1903. James Deakin founded the firm in 1866 and by 1878 and had been joined by his son William as partner, with two further sons joining in the 1880s. The company was very successful with manufacturing in Sheffield and showrooms in London, Glasgow and Belfast. In 1935 they were involved in an ill-fated merger which led to the company's collapse within a couple of years.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The jam spoon is 12cm / 4.7ins long and weighs in at a respectable 19.7g / 0.69oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the bowl, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter l for 1903 and the JD over WD in a shield makers' mark for John & William Deakin of James Deakin & Sons.
