Edwardian Silver Hot Water Jug, H. Woodward, 1906

Here we have an elegant Edwardian Sterling Silver Hot Water Jug. The jug is of bulbous form, standing on three pad feet with a wavy edge top rim and lid. The handle and finial are polished wood so that they can be handled when the jug's contents are hot. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The hot water jug was made in London by Horace Woodward & Co Ltd and dates to 1906. The firm was established around 1850 by George Cartwright and Joseph Hirons, with Horace Woodward joining as a partner in 1853. They were silversmiths and electroplaters, active in both Birmingham and London and were involved in the Great Exhibition (1851) and many other international fairs. In 1865 Woodward became the sole proprietor and the name of the firm was changed to Horace Woodward & Co. Woodward left the company in 1883 but it continued under his name until it was bought by Adie Brothers in 1919.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 115 years of good service. PLease make sure to view all the photographs.
The jug stands 16.3cm / 6.4ins high and is 7.5cm / 2.9ins in diameter at its widest point. It weighs in at a substantial 269g / 9.5oz.
The hallmarks, on the side of the neck, are somewhat rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter l for 1906 and the quatrefoil H W & Co Ld makers' mark for Horace Woodward & Co Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the jug.
