Edwardian Silver Cigarette Case, Zimmerman, 1903
Here we have an attractive Edwardian Sterling Silver Cigarette Case with a gilt interior. The rectangular case is engraved with acanthus leaves to back and front and has a blank circular cartouche on the front. It is curved to fit comfortably into a pocket.
The cigarette case was made in Birmingham by noted silversmiths A & J Zimmerman and dates to 1903. The firm was founded by brothers Arthur & John Zimmerman in Birmingham in 1879, operating from premises at Regent Place in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. They later opened a second premises and a showroom in London. The firm produced a wide range of silverware of consistently good quality up until they ceased trading around 1930.
Condition is very good with just the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 120 years of good service. The hinge and clasp are in full working order and the case snaps shut securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The case measures 8.3cm / 3.2ins by 6cm / 2.3ins and is 1.1cm / 0.43ins deep. It weighs in at a very respectable 75.5g / 2.6oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the case, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter d for 1903 and the A & J. Z makers' mark for A & J Zimmerman.
