Edwardian Silver Cigarette Case, Jos. Gloster 1907
Here we have a good quality Edwardian Sterling Silver Cigarette Case with a gilt interior. The case is a plain oblong designed to hold cigarettes in both halves and has no initials or personalisation of any kind. It is curved to fit snugly into a back trouser pocket or the inside pocket of a jacket.
The cigarette case is made in Birmingham by Joseph Gloster Ltd and dates to 1907. Joseph Gloster founded his firm of silversmiths in the 1880s and they quickly established a reputation for good quality silverware. They remained in business for nearly a hundred years before closing in the late 1970s.
The cigarette case is in overall good condition with just a couple of small dings, probably from spending much of its life in someone's pocket! The catch is in good working order and the case snaps shut securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The case is 7.7cm / 3ins long, 5.6cm / 2.2ins wide and 1.3cm / 0.5ins deep. It weighs a very respectable 60.7g / 2.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks in the gilt interior are crisp and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter h for 1907 and the J.G makers' mark for Joseph Gloster Ltd. In addition the other half has the lion passant and date letter h and the thumb catch has the lion passant, so you can be confident that this is Sterling Silver throughout.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
