Edwardian Silver Cigarette Box, Mappin & Webb 1902
Here we have a top notch Edwardian Sterling Silver Cigarette Box with a Cedar Wood lining and a leather covered base. The lid is engraved with a crest of a lion's paw and the Latin motto En Dextra Fidesque, which translates as my right hand and my loyalty. The lion's paw has been used by many families as their crest but we haven't managed to identify the specific family name that combines the paw and the motto as yet.
The cigarette box was made in London by world famous silversmiths Mappin & Webb and dates to 1902. One of the best known names in English silverware, the firm was originally founded in 1810 by Joseph Mappin Snr. In 1859 the company split into two parts which would become Mappin Brothers and Mappin & Webb. They were reunited when Mappin & Webb bought Mappin Brothers in 1902. The firm remained in the Mappin family until it was merged with Walker & Hall and Elkington & Co to form British Silverware in 1963.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The oblong box measures 14cm / 5.5ins by 8.8cm / 3.5ins and stands 4.5cm / 1.7ins high. It weighs in at a very substantial 506g / 17.84oz.
The hallmarks, on the side of the box, are a little rubbed from polishing but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter g for 1902 and the distinctive Mn & Wb makers' mark for Mappin & Webb. The box also has the Mappin & Webb retail stamp low down on the back panel.
Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the box.
