Edwardian Silver Canoe Pin Cushion, B'ham, 1906
Here we have a charming and unusual Edwardian Sterling Silver Pin Cushion in the shape of a canoe. This is a substantial item in a good heavy gauge of silver and features a pin cushion section covered in green felt. There is a shallow central rib along the base which means that if knocked onto its side the canoe will self right itself and return to the upright position.
The pin cushion is made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths Adie & Lovekin Ltd and dates to 1906. Founded by James Adie and Alfred Lovekin in 1863, the firm specialised in fancy goods and novelty items and are particularly well known for their pin cushions and other sewing related items, which are much sought after by collectors and sewing enthusiasts.
Condition is very good with just one tiny ding on one one side of the canoe. The green felt cover on the cushion is probably not the original but it has been nicely done and is in keeping with the original style. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The canoe is of a good size, measuring 9.5cm / 3.7ins long by 2.1cm / 0.83ins wide and standing 2.6cm / 1in high at the prow. It weighs in at 59.6g / 2.1oz but this does of course include the pin cushion material.
The hallmarks, on the side of the canoe, are slightly rubbed but still nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter g for 1906 and the A & L Ld makers' mark for Adie & Lovekin Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the pin cushion.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
