Edwardian Glass Dressing Table Pot with Silver Lid
This is an attractive Edwardian Cut Glass Dressing Table Pot with a Sterling Silver lid. The pot is oblong with hobnail cut decoration all around the body and a plain base. The lid has embossed scroll and flower decoration surrounding a blank cartouche and is gilded on the underside.
The dressing table pot is made in Birmingham by James Deakin & Sons and dates to the end of the Edwardian era in 1910. The firm was founded by James Deakin in Sheffield in 1866. Although it remained Sheffield based, items were also hallmarked in London, Birmingham and Chester. James Deakin retired in 1893 with his three sons William, John & Albert Deakin taking over the running of the company. In the late 1930s the firm ran into financial problems and ceased trading with the name eventually being sold on to a succession of other companies.
Condition is very good with no chips or cracks in the glass. There are two very small holes in the silver lid where a couple of the high points have been polished through after many years of cleaning but it is otherwise in very good condition and fits snugly onto the glass pot. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The dressing table pot is 8.3cm / 3.3ins long, 3.6cm / 1.4ins wide and 3.5cm / 1.38ins high. The lid by itself weighs 11.0g / 0.39oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together the pot weighs in at 93.1g / 3.3oz.
The hallmarks on the lid are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter l for 1910 and the JD over WD makers' mark for John & William Deakin of James Deakin & Sons Ltd.
