Edwardian Cut Glass Vanity Pot with Silver Lid, 1908
Here we have a fine quality Edwardian Cut Glass Dressing Table Pot with a hallmarked Sterling Silver lid. The glass pot is slice cut to create a series of flat panels around the body. The silver lid has a wavy line decoration around the top and the inside of the lid is gilded, always a sign of top quality.
This would almost certainly have started life as part of a larger dressing table set but, as in most cases today, has become separated over the course of time. It will hold virtually anything from cream to pins to trinkets to antique jewellery with the gilding inside the lid ensuring that the silver doesn\'t get corroded.
The lid is hallmarked for the firm Sothers, Orchard & Co of Birmingham and dated 1908. Sothers & Orchard seem to have had a very short lived partnership as their mark is only known from pieces dated 1907 and 1908, making this quite a rare little pot! In 1909 W.G. Sothers & Co was set up and remained in business up until the early 1960s.
Condition is very good with no chips or cracks to the glass and no dings or dents in the lid, just the superficial wear that has to be expected after over 100 years of use and a little thinning of the interior gilding. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pot is 3.8cm / 1.5ins in diameter and stands 3.1cm / 1.2ins high. The Sterling Silver lid weighs 5.5g / 0.19oz and the pot & lid combined weigh in at 29.0g / 1.02oz.
The hallmarks on the lid are very easy to read and show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter II for 1908 and the S.O & Co makers\' mark for Sothers, Orchard & Co. There is also a registered design number of 516588, which shows that the design of the pot was first registered in 1907/08.
