Edwardian Amber Cheroot Holder in Silver Case 1902
Here we have a top quality Edwardian Amber Cheroot Holder with a 9ct Gold Rim in its original Sterling Silver Case. The tapered amber holder has an attractive swirling pattern in it below the deep gold rim. The silver case is gilded on the inside and has a loop at the end to attach it to a watch chain. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The silver case was made in Sheffield by the renowned silversmiths Walker & Hall, whilst the 9ct gold rimmed amber holder was made for Maurice Flixher in London, who would also have ordered the case from Walker & Hall. Both items are dated for 1902.
Based in South East London in the early years of the 20th century, Maurice Flixher imported luxury items from Europe and commissioned pieces from silversmiths in London, Birmingham and Sheffield, particularly smoking accessories, which he then wholesaled to high end retailers around the country. He seems to have ceased trading around the start of the First World War when importing from Europe became virtually impossible.
Condition is very good, with no dings or damage on the cheroot holder and just one small bruise at the bottom end of the silver case, plus the overall superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cheroot holder is 6.6cm / 2.6ins long, 1.7cm / 0.67ins in diameter and weighs 8.9g / 0.31oz. The silver case is 7cm / 2.75ins long, 2.2cm / 0.87ins in diameter and weighs in at 23.2g / 0.82oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the gold rim of the holder show the 9 and .375 marks for 9ct gold, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter g for 1902 and the M F sponsors' mark for Maurice Flixher. The hallmarks on the inside rim of the case show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter k for 1902 and the distinctive W & H in a pennant makers' mark for Walker & Hall.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the holder and case.
