Early 20th C Dutch Silver Bowl, Moerkerk & Co 1934
Here we have a beautiful early 20th Century Dutch 833 Silver Pierced Bowl. The bowl is oval with a solid base and raised pierced sides decorated with birds and flowering plants. The underside of the base is engraved with Van Opa en Oma, which translates as From Grandad and Grandma, and the date 8 - 12 - 34.
The bowl was made by the firm Fa. Moerkerk & Co of Haarlem and assayed in Amsterdam in 1934. Moerkerk & Co, also known as Th. & P. Moerkerk were active from the 1920s to the 1950s.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and no damage to the intricate pierced design. There is a slight coppery tone to the underside of the base, where it is engraved, which you sometimes get with 833 grade silver, which is 83.3% silver and 16.7% copper. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bowl measures 20cm / 7.9ins by 15.2cm / 6ins and stands 2.5cm / 0.98ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 150.2g / 5.3oz of solid 833 grade silver.
The hallmarks, three below one bird and one above the shoulder of the other bird, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant above the number 2 for 833/1000 grade silver, the Minerva assay mark with A on the helmet for Amsterdam, the date letter Z for 1934 and the M14C makers' mark for Fa. Moerkerk & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the bowl.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
