Dutch Silver Tea Strainer, H. Hooykaas, 1930
This is an ornate Early 20th Century Dutch 833 Grade Silver Tea Strainer. The strainer has a three masted galleon as the finial at the top of a stem that features scrolls and faces. The pierced bowl has a flat rim with four panels showing rural scenes with houses, windmills, livestock and a canal boat set within a pierced foliate design.
The tea strainer is made by H. Hooykaas or Hooijkaas of Schoonhoven and dates to 1930. Hooykaas founded the firm around 1875 and they remained in business until at least the late 1970s. They were based in Schoonhoven, which was known as the Silver City of the Netherlands as it was the base for so many silversmiths.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 90 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tea strainer is a good size and will sit comfortably on most teacups. It measures 14.4cm / 5.6ins long and is 8.2cm / 3.2ins across the rim of the bowl. It weighs a very respectable 37.1g / 1.3oz of solid silver.
The Dutch hallmarks are well struck and clear to read. As is usual in the Netherlands, they are spread around the item. The bottom panel of the rim has the lion passant above the number 2, showing that it is 833 / 1000 grade silver and the H.H makers' mark for H. Hooykaas. At the bottom of the bowl is the date letter V for 1930 and on one sail of the galleon finial is the Minerva with a letter M on her helmet showing that it was assayed in Schoonhoven.
