Dutch 833 Silver Repousse Dish, Amsterdam, 1913
This is a superb quality Dutch 833 Silver Bowl featuring repousse decoration of traditional tavern scenes interspersed with large secessionist style faces. The bowl is made in Amsterdam, Netherlands by the renowned Zaanse Zilversmederij and dates to 1913. The bowl is made from 833 / 1000 silver, which was one of the two Dutch silver standards at the time. The silver marks, three on one of the side panels and two on the base panel, are well struck and clear to read, though unfortunately they don't show particularly well in the photographs.
The bowl is in excellent condition with no dings or dents. The detail on the tavern scenes and the large faces is exquisite and the repousse work and finishing gives real depth and texture to the bowl. This has clearly been a treasured item for over 100 years. Please make sure to view all the photos.
The bowl is 21.2cm long, 18cm wide and 3.8cm high. It weighs in at a very substantial 225.6g.
The Netherlands has an excellent hallmarking system for silver which goes back centuries and the marks on this piece give plenty of information. The silver marks are the lion passant over a number 2 for 833 Silver (on both the side panel and the base), the Minerva duty mark with an A on the helmet showing it was assayed in Amsterdam, the date letter D for 1913 (both of these on the side panel) and the ZZ and hammer makers' mark for Zaanse Zilversmederij (on the base).
Shipping in the UK is by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post and costs £9, which includes insurance for the value of the item.
