Here we have a superb quality Deluxe Mid-Century Sterling Silver Cigarette Case. The case is oblong with all over engine turned decoration and the top decorated with a rose gold plated inset. The case is opened with a smooth sliding action by pushing the lid upwards slightly whereupon it opens to reveal a luxuriously gold plated interior with a double gold plated wire to hold the cigarettes in place. The inside of the lid has the inscription M.L.B. 14th Nov 1954.

The cigarette case was made in Birmingham by W.H. Manton Ltd and dates to 1951, so the inscription was done just a few years later. Founded in 1930, W.H. Manton produced antique jewellery and small items of silverware such as money clips, buckles, napkin rings, cigarette cases and compacts. They remained in business well into the 1990s.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and no significant loss to the gold plating, just the overall superficial surface wear that you would expect in an item of this age that would have been frequently handled. The sliding mechanism and the hinge are in full working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The cigarette case measures 13.7cm / 5.4ins by 8.2cm / 3.2ins and is 0.8cm / 0.31ins deep. It weighs in at a very substantial 229.6g / 8.1oz of solid Sterling Silver and Gilt.

The hallmarks, on the inside of the lid, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter B for 1951 and the W H M makers' mark for W.H. Manton Ltd. There is a second partial set in the base showing the lion passant and the date letter B.
