Circa 1890 Threaded Glass Silver Top Noggin
Dating to around 1885, this is a miniature wine decanter shape, is more akin to a larger whisky noggin and coupled with the two shot glasses we would be favouring a personal spirit jug. This is a fascinating set, the silver marks to the beakers and the cover clearly place the origin as continental Europe, (800 grade), there is the Vienna import code for 1872 to 1902, the silver grade is 800 and the silversmiths mark would appear to be CG and that could be Georg CZAP (1880 -1889) which would fit the Austro-Hungarian dogs head mark for Waidhofen an der Ybbs (A3 is evident inside the dogs head lozenge) . The similar type of glass is most often found on English identified strikes although there is a Bohemia style also apparent in the late part of the 19th century.
Antique threaded glass is normally associated with match strikes and more often on English hallmarked items, it is unusual to find a suite of small spirit decanter (noggin) and tot (shot) tumblers in the same form on non English/Scottish identified items, there are odd references to French claret jugs in this form and there is a Bohemian thread glass on various objects at the end of the 19th century . There is always the possibility that the intention was to provide the gentleman smoker with custom glassware that not only dispensed the drink but provided a striking surface for matches to light chosen tobacco product. There is no ready reference to the origins or catalogue for this most unusual antique set of personal decanting and drinking.
All pieces are marked, the combination of the most legible taken from the jug and the tumblers make a combined assay of Vienna Import mark (1 AV), a left looking dogs head sided with 3 A inside lozenge (read as Austro-Hungarian - Waidhofen an der Ybbs) and CG stamp for Czap, Georg (1880 -1889).
Size: 5 1/2 inches (14 cm) overall height diameter is just under 4 inches (10cm) JUG.
just under 2 inches (5 cm) diameter 1 1/4 inches (3 cm) SHOT GLASS
Condition: all items in the suite are in excellent undamaged condition.
This is a rare item, and has survived 140 plus years. It is different in size to a traditional noggin (it's slightly larger) and is most likely a made to order piece from the Austrian silversmith.
