Victorian Silver Decanter Label, Birmingham, 1891
This is an attractive and unusual Victorian Sterling Silver Decanter Label for Madeira. The label is shaped as a wide bowl suspended from a ribbon garland with MADEIRA engraved across the front of the bowl. The label hangs from a chain attached at either side.
The decanter label was made in Birmingham by Stokes & Ireland and dates to 1891. The firm was established in Birmingham by William Henry Stokes & Arthur George Ireland in 1891 and operated from premises in Great Hampton Street in the Jewellery Quarter. Although Birmingham based, the majority of their pieces were assayed in Chester with only a few marked in their home town of Birmingham. They produced a very broad range of consistently good quality silverware and remained in business until the late 1930s.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no damage to the chain and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 135 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The decanter label is 8.9cm / 3.5ins from the top of the chain to the bottom of the label and 4.5cm / 1.8ins wide. It weighs in at 9.3g / 0.33oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the back of the label, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham the date letter r for 1891 and the S & I makers' mark for Stokes & Ireland.
