1 Antique Victorian Bronze Jockey & Groom Sculpture Signed After J W Good 1845-1879.
A feature that stands out are the beautiful horse reins still attached being held by the groom.
Subject Jockey rider on English equine thoroughbred race horse with groom near the front holding the horse reins.
With plaque on the base Title Jockey & Groom By J Good.
Having sumptuous natural old aged verdigris patina.
Initial signed on the base J.W. Good.
John Willis Good is today recognised as perhaps the most talented English animalier sculptor of his time producing works which were comparable to the masters of the French animalier school. During his short but prolific career he concentrated mainly on studies of hunting scenes, dogs and racehorses in bronze and terracotta. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1870 to 1878 with the firm of Elkington & Co. casting many of his models.
Sadly, at the age of 34, after only ten years exhibiting his work, he shot himself in his studio on the Fulham Road, London. Perhaps for this reason we know very little about him today other than he took a probationary course in the schools of the Royal Academy and later studied under the celebrated sculptor J. E. Boehm. Between 1870 and 1878 he exhibited sixteen pieces at the Royal Academy and on one occasion collaborated on a work with Charles Lutyens, himself a well-known sporting painter who also produced several sculptures.
