Art Nouveau Teaspoons & Tongs, James Dixon, 1912
This is a very good quality boxed set of Art Nouveau Sterling Silver teaspoons and sugar tongs. The spoons and tongs were made by renowned silversmiths James Dixon & Sons in Sheffield and date to 1912. James Dixon & Sons has a history going back to 1806 and they established their factory at Cornish Place in Sheffield in 1824, where they continued producing flatware and cutlery into the early 1990s.
This set of six teaspoons and a pair of sugar tongs has a very distinctively Art Nouveau sinuous pattern along the edges of the stems and down both arms of the sugar tongs.
Both the spoons and tongs are in very good condition with no dings or dents and just the minimal wear you would expect after over 100 years of use. The box is a bit scuffed on the outside and the silk inside is a little worn but the hinges are in good condition and the catch is in full working order. There is a retailers' label inside the box for W.R Turk of 76 High Street, Deal in Kent, which is a nice added touch. The spoons & tongs have no initials or personalisation of any kind. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stems and the back of one bowl of the sugar tongs are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the gothic date letter "u" for 1912 and the J.D & S makers' mark for James Dixon & Sons
The teaspoons are each 11.6 cm long, the sugar tongs are 10.7cm long and the full set (unboxed) weighs in at a very substantial 117.4g of solid Sterling Silver.
