Art Nouveau Silver Vase, Henry Matthews, 1908
1 of 6
Here we have a beautiful Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Vase with Gilt Interior from the Edwardian era. The vase has a stepped circular base, which is weighted for stability. The slender stem rises from the base and opens out into a broad bowl with a planished finish that is shaped as a flower.
The vase was made in Birmingham by silversmith Henry Matthews and dates to 1908. Henry Matthews registered his mark in 1893 and ran his firm from premises in Vittoria Street in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter. He made a very wide range of good quality silverware and remained in business up until around 1930. His pieces were stocked in many high end stores around the country.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no significant loss to the gilding inside the bowl and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 115 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The vase is 15cm / 5.9ins tall and 6.5cm / 2.5ins across the rim of the bowl. It weighs in at 176.4g / 6.2oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the base.
The hallmarks, on the side of the bowl, are a little rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter II for 1908 and the H M makers' mark for Henry Matthews. There is a second mark next to the H M one which is quite distorted but may be C S. This is almost certainly the retailer's stamp.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
