Art Nouveau Silver Tazza, Finnigans, 1909
Here we have an elegant Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Tazza from the Edwardian period. The tazza has a circular pedestal base, a broad shallow bowl and two sweeping handles with turned finials. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The tazza was made in London by famous retailer Finnigans of Manchester and dates to 1909. Finnigans was established by Brian Finnigan in Manchester in 1830. They became famous for their luxury luggage and steamer trunks for which they were awarded a gold medal at the Great Exhibition in 1851, which enhanced their reputation even further. They opened a store in London’s New Bond Street in 1879 and enlarged their range to include travel accessories, clocks, watches and silverware and later still they moved into fashion, sportswear and beauty products. They ceased trading in 1988.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 115 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tazza is 22.1cm / 8.7ins from handle to handle, 12.5cm / 4.9ins across the bowl and stands 8.8cm / 3.5ins high. It weighs in at a very substantial 195.1g / 6.88oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, high up on the outside of the bowl, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter o for 1909 and the Fs Ld makers' mark for Finnigans Ltd. In addition, the underside of the base has the retail stamp FINNIGANS LTD MANCHESTER.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the tazza.
