Art Nouveau Silver Specimen Vase, Atkin Bros, 1901
This is a very elegant Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Specimen Vase in the form of a calla lily. The vase stands on a stepped square base with indented corners with the lily shaped body tapering outwards from the centre. It would look beautiful with a single rose in it or with two or three stems of smaller flowers.
The vase is made in Sheffield by the noted silversmiths Atkin Brothers and dates to 1901. Atkin Brothers traced its history back to Thomas Law who was active from around 1750. Henry Atkin became a partner with his grandson Joseph Law and took over the firm around 1840. The company remained under the control of the Atkin family until being bought out by C.J. Vander in 1958.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The vase stands 14.2cm / 5.6ins high and the base is 5.6cm / 2.2ins square. It weighs in at a very respectable 67.2g / 2.37oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, just below the rim, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter II for 1901 and the H A makers' mark for Harry Atkin of Atkin Brothers.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the vase.
