Art Nouveau Silver Handled Shoe Horn, B'ham, 1900
A very good quality Art Nouveau Sterling Silver handled Shoe Horn from the end of Queen Victoria's long reign. It is made in Birmingham by well-known silversmiths Crisford & Norris and dates to 1900. Crisford & Norris started their partnership in the mid-1890s and carried on in business until the late 1970s. They specialised in personal items and this shoe horn is typical of their high quality workmanship. There is a typically Nouveau depiction of a female figure on both sides of the handle surrounded by floral and foliate decoration.
The Shoe Horn is in good overall condition with no dings or dents in the silver handle. The steel blade has some signs of wear but this is only to be expected after 120 years of helping people into their shoes. This would have been a very luxurious item when originally purchased. It is still perfectly usable as a shoe horn today or would make a good addition to any Art Nouveau collection. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The Shoe Horn is 21.5cm long and weighs 79.7g but this does of course include the steel blade.
The hallmarks down one side of the handle, which are well struck and clear to read, are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "a" for 1900 and the C&N makers' mark for Crisford & Norris. The other side of the handle has the lion passant and the date letter "a". The blade is stamped STEEL.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
