Art Deco Silver Trinket Dish, Roberts & Belk, 1946
Here we have a very stylish Art Deco Sterling Silver Trinket Dish from the mid 1940s. The dish is oblong and stands on four splayed ball feet. The base of the dish is decorated with a large circle and a radiating sequence of lines and smaller circles to give a starburst effect.
The dish is made in Sheffield by silversmiths Roberts & Belk and dates to 1946. Roberts & Belk traced its history back to the firm of Furniss, Poles & Turner founded in 1810. William Briggs joined the firm in 1822 and later took Samuel Roberts as a partner. After William Briggs retired in 1863, Charles Belk joined and the firm became Roberts & Belk, the name they retained until they were bought by C.J. Vander in 1961. They were a very successful company producing a wide range of domestic silverware, tableware and flatware.
Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect from use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The dish is a well made piece in a good gauge of silver. It measures 10.9cm / 4.3ins by 6.9cm / 2.7ins and stands 1.9cm / 0.75ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 88.9g / 3.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the upper part of the body below the rim, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter D for 1946 and the distinctive R & B makers' mark for Roberts & Belk.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the dish.
