Art Deco Silver Pepper Shaker, G'smiths & S'smiths

1 of 6
This is a very stylish Art Deco Sterling Silver Pepper Shaker. The shaker has a stepped rectangular base and a tapered body. The lid is domed with a fan style finial and lightly gilded on the inside. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The pepper shaker was made in London by the renowned Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company and dates to 1938. Founded in 1880 by William Gibson and John Langman, The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company occupied a famous showroom at 112 Regent Street where they served a high end clientele with goods of the very finest quality. They manufactured at Clerkenwell in London and the Regent Works in Sheffield. In 1952 they amalgamated with Garrard & Co.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no corrosion and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. The body does lean a little to one side but this doesn't appear to be due to any obvious damage. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pepper shaker is 7.3cm / 2.9ins high, 3.5cm / 1.4ins wide and 2.5cm / 0.98ins deep. It weighs in at 38.2g / 1.35oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the side of the body and the inside rim of the lid, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter C for 1938 and the distinctive G & S Co Ltd makers' mark for The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
