Edwardian Silver Pepper Shaker, Walker & Hall 1908
This is an elegant Edwardian Sterling Silver Pepper Shaker. The shaker is of neo-classical form with an oval base, a part reeded body and a domed lid with turned finial. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The pepper shaker was made in Sheffield by famous silversmiths Walker & Hall and dates to 1908. Walker & Hall are one of the great names of English silverware. The firm was founded by George Walker in 1845 with Henry Hall joining in 1853 to form Walker & Hall. Hugely successful and very highly regarded they remained in business until they were merged with Mappin & Webb and Elkington & Co to form British Silverware in 1963.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 115 years of use. The lid fits securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pepper shaker stands 9.2cm / 3.6ins high and is 3.6cm / 1.4ins wide. It weighs in at a respectable 33.2g / 1.17oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, at the top of the body and on the inside rim of the lid, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter q for 1908 and the distinctive W & H in a pennant makers' mark for Walker & Hall.
