Art Deco Silver Inkwell, Mappin & Webb, 1934

1 of 6
Here we have a stylish Art Deco Sterling Silver Inkwell. The inkwell is formed as a broad based cone with a stepped rim and stepped hinged lid in typical Deco style. It has a clear glass liner and the base is weighted for stability. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The inkwell was made in Birmingham by world famous silversmiths Mappin & Webb and dates to 1934. Originally founded in 1810 by Joseph Mappin Snr, in 1859 the firm split into two parts which would become Mappin Brothers and Mappin & Webb. They were reunited when Mappin & Webb bought Mappin Brothers in 1902. The firm remained in the Mappin family until it was merged with Walker & Hall and Elkington & Co to form British Silverware in 1963.
The inkwell has certainly seen some use but remains in perfectly usable condition. The lid does not quite close flat, there is a ding in the body and a dent in the bottom rim on one side. Other than that there is just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The inkwell is 10.5cm / 4.1ins in diameter and stands 4.4cm / 1.7ins high. It weighs in at 293.1g / 10.3oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the base.
The hallmarks, on the side of the bottom rim, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter K for 1934, the King George V & Queen Mary Jubilee Mark and the Mn & Wb makers' mark for Mappin & Webb. It also has the Mappin & Webb retail stamp.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the inkwell.
