Art Deco Silver Handled Letter Opener, Sheff, 1933
This is an elegant Art Deco Sterling Silver Handled Letter Opener. The letter opener has a polished steel blade and a tapered silver handle with Odeon style decoration at the end. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The letter opener was made in Sheffield by renowned cutlers and silversmiths Thomas Bradbury & Sons and dates to 1933. The firm traced its origin back to Fenton, Creswick & Co in 1773 with the first Thomas Bradbury joining as a partner in 1795. By 1831 the firm was run by Thomas Bradbury Snr & Jnr and remained in the control of the Bradbury family until the early years of the 20th century. The company was bought by Atkin Brothers in 1943 and they maintained the brand name into the early 1950s.
Condition is good with just a few tiny dings in the handle and a slight kink almost certainly caused by repeated pressure from the owner's thumb whilst opening letters. The polished steel blade is in excellent condition. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The letter opener is 21.6cm / 8.5ins long and weighs 34.6g / 1.22oz.
The hallmarks are split in two around the ferrule where the handle joins the blade. On one side is the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield and the date letter q for 1933. On the other side is the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the date letter q and the T.B & S in a shield makers' mark for Thomas Bradbury & Sons Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
