Art Deco Silver Cream Ladle, Wakely & Wheeler 1933
This is a very stylish Art Deco Sterling Silver Cream Ladle from the 1930s. It has the distinctive stepped finial that is so typical of Deco design.
Cream ladles are the one of the smallest type of ladles. They originated in the late 18th century when they were used for serving from the cream pails that were in fashion at the time. It is very unusual to find a 20th century example. This ladle would be perfect for use with a small sauce boat on the dining table.
The ladle is made in London by Wakely & Wheeler and dates to 1933. Wakely & Wheeler was the final incarnation of a family firm of silversmiths dating back to 1791 when it was founded by John Lias. In the 1880s James Wakely & then Frank Wheeler came in as partners, eventually replacing the Lias family.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and only the most minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after this period of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The ladle is 10.5cm / 4.1ins long and weighs in at 14.5g / 0.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are nice and easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the Gothic date letter s for 1933 and the distinctive W&W makers' mark for Wakely & Wheeler.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
