Art Deco Silver Compact, Turner & Simpson, 1946
This is a very attractive Art Deco Sterling Silver Compact with mirror from just after World War II in 1946. The compact is hexagonal with engine turned decoration on the base and the lid and a distinctively Deco stepped design to the front of the lid. There is a blank cartouche, which makes it ideal as a gift.
On opening the compact you have the mirror inside the lid, which has a few remnants of powder on it but gives a good clear reflection, whilst in the base is the powder compartment complete with its original sifter screen and puff.
Under the sifter screen you'll find the hallmark, which is nice and clear to read. It shows the lion passant for Sterling Silver (that's 925/1000 grade), the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "W" for 1946 and the T&S makers' mark for Turner & Simpson.
In the austere years immediately following the Second World War this would have been a very luxurious purchase and it still has a real feeling of quality and elegance.
The compact measures 7cm / 2.75" in diameter, it weighs 47.7g / 1.68oz.
Condition is excellent with no dings or dents. The catch and hinges are in perfect working order. The compact is suitable for use with modern loose face powder. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
This is a top quality compact in superb condition. It would make a fabulous gift or be a fine addition to a collection.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery Parcel Post, which includes cover for the value of the compact.
Overseas customers please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
