Art Deco Silver Cigarette Case, Deakin & Francis
This is a fine quality Art Deco Sterling Silver Cigarette Case with gold washed interior. The cigarette case is basically square with all over engine turned decoration and typical Art Deco stepped decoration down each side. Unusually there is no cartouche and therefore no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The cigarette case is made in Birmingham by Deakin & Francis and dates to the start of World War Two in 1939. Brothers-in-law Stephen Deakin and John Francis founded the firm in the early 1880s and they remain in business today.
Very little silverware was produced during the Second World War due to scarcity of silver and lack of manpower, with many of the silversmiths being redirected into manufacturing for the war effort.
Condition is good with just a few surface marks to the engine turned outside of the case. The inside is in very nice condition. Given this lived through the war years and may have been carried by a serviceman it is in remarkably good condition. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The case is 8.4cm / 3.3ins by 8.1cm / 3.2ins and weighs a very respectable 102.7g / 3.6oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks inside the case are very crisp and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter P for 1939 and the D&F makers' mark for Deakin & Francis.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cigarette case.
