Art Deco Silver Cigarette Case, Cohen & Charles
Here we have a top quality Art Deco Sterling Silver Cigarette Case with a gilt interior. The case is rectangular in shape with a bevelled edge and all over engine turned decoration. There is no cartouche and no initials or personalisation of any kind, making this ideal as a gift or a great addition to any collection.
The cigarette case is made by Cohen & Charles and assayed in London in 1921, right at the start of the Art Deco era. Albert Cohen and Charles Solomon founded they company in Birmingham in 1890 and later opened a showroom in London's prestigious Holborn Circus. They specialised in high end items for discerning city gentlemen, many of them smoking related, and remained in business until the late 1960s.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 100 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cigarette case is 11.5cm / 4.5ins high and 8.3cm / 3.3ins wide. It weighs a substantial 151.7g / 5.3oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the case, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the Gothic date letter f for 1921 and the C & C makers' mark for Cohen & Charles.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cigarette case.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
