Art Deco Silver Cigarette Case, AE Poston, 1937

Here we have a very stylish Art Deco Slimline Sterling Silver Cigarette Case. The cigarette case is oblong with engine turned decoration to front and back and additional Odeon style decoration on the front. The inside is gilded. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The cigarette case was made in Birmingham for the London retailer A.E. Poston & Co and dates to 1937. Founded by Arthur Edward Poston as a City of London retail firm in the late 1920s selling silverware, electroplate, antique jewellery and watches, by the 1930s they were manufacturing silver and silver plate items in Sheffield and commissioning them from silversmiths in Birmingham. They focused on tableware and smoking accessories and the company remained in business until the year 2000.
Condition is very good, with just one very shallow ding in the back of the case plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. Bear in mind this will have spent most of its life in a pocket or handbag. The clasp and hinge are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cigarette case is 8.1cm / 3.2ins by 6.5cm / 2.5ins and is 0.8cm / 0.31ins deep. It weighs in at 68.0g / 2.4oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the case, are a little rubbed but still okay to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter N for 1937 and the distinctive A E P & Co Ltd makers' mark for A.E. Poston & Co Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cigarette case.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
