Art Deco Silver Cigarette Box, Birmingham, 1946
Here we have an attractive Art Deco Sterling Silver Cigarette Box with Cedar Wood lining. The box is rectangular with plain sides and an engine turned lid. The cedar wood interior has a movable divider to accomodate cigars or cigarettes of different sizes. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The cigarette box is made in Birmingham by silversmiths Nock & Newman and dates to 1946, immediately after the Second World War. There is very little information available about Nock & Newman. Their mark is rarely seen and only ever on cigarette boxes which all seem to date to 1946, when the mark was first registered at the assay office. It would seem that the business was a short lived one in the immediate post war period.
Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents in the silver and just the most minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 75 years of good service. The cedar wood lining is in equally good condition. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The box measures 16.5cm / 6.5ins by 9cm / 3.5ins and stands 4.5cm / 1.7ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 465g / 16.4oz but this is of course a combination of the silver and the cedar wood lining.
The hallmarks on the side of the body are well struck and clear to read. The show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter W for 1946 and the N & N makers' mark for Nock & Newman. The lid has a partial set showing the lion passant and the date letter W.
Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cigarette box.
