Art Deco Silver Cigarette Box, Alx. Clark Co, 1929
This is a smart Art Deco Sterling Silver Cigarette Box. The box is square with plain sides and an engine turned striped top surrounding a square blank cartouche. The interior is cedar wood lined.
The cigarette box was made in London by high end retailers and manufacturers The Alexander Clark Co and dates to 1929. The firm was founded by Clift Alexander Mawer Clark in London in 1891. Originally just a retailer, the company moved into manufacturing in the mid-1890s. By the start of the First World War they had several retail sites in London and were also manufacturing in Sheffield and Birmingham. In 1912 they became the Alexander Clark Co Ltd. The firm diversified into luggage and travel goods alongside their silverware and silver plate and remained in business into the 1940s.
Condition is good with just a few little dings dotted around the body and a small shallow crease in the lid. The hinge is in good working order and the box closes securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The box is 8.2cm / 3.2ins square and 2.9cm / 1.1ins high. It weighs in at 150.7g / 5.3oz but this does of course include the light cedar wood lining.
The hallmarks, on the side of the body and the lid, are easy to read with just a little rubbing to the makers' mark. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter o for 1929 and the distinctive A C Co Ld makers' mark for The Alexander Clark Co Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cigarette box.
