Art Deco Silver Cigar / Cigarette Box, B'ham, 1938
Here we have a fine quality Art Deco Sterling Silver Cigar or Cigarette Box. The box has the traditional cedar wood lining to keep the tobacco fresh with a leather covering on the base. The sides are plain silver whilst the top is seperated into four diagonal quadrants with engine turned decoration and a blank central cartouche.
The box has never had a central divider so it could be used for cigarettes laid out vertically or cigars laid out horizontally. Today it could equally be used as a storage box for antique jewellery or for stationery items on a desk.
The box is made in Birmingham by silversmiths Sanders & Mackenzie and dates to 1938. Ernest Wilfrid Sanders and Henry Arthur Mackenzie founded their business in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter in 1911. They produced a wide range of silverware including a variety of smoking accessories and remained in business until at least the late 1970s.
Condition is good with just a few tiny dings on the silver body. The hinge is in good working order and the cedar wood interior is in nice condition. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The box measures 13.2cm / 5.2ins by 8.6cm / 3.4ins and stands 2.2cm / 0.87ins high. It weighs in at 363.5g / 12.8oz including of course the cedar wood interior.
The hallmarks, on the side of the box, are a little rubbed but still very clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter O for 1938 and the S & M in conjoined circles makers' mark for Sanders & Mackenzie.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the box.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
