Art Deco Silver Cake Fork Set, Mappin & Webb, 1933/4
Here we have a top quality Art Deco Sterling Silver cased set of six Cake Forks plus a Cake / Pastry server. The forks are in the Deco style Athenian pattern introduced in 1931. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind making these ideal as a gift for a wedding, silver anniversary, retirement or any special occasion.
The cake forks are made in Sheffield by world famous silversmiths Mappin & Webb in 1933/4 and retailed through their store in London's Regent Street. The serving fork and four of the cake forks are dated 1933 and the remaining two cake forks are from 1934. Mappin & Webb are one of the best known of all English silversmiths and have a well earned reputation for producing silverware of the highest quality.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the most minimal superficial surface wear, far less than you would expect of a set that is nearly 90 years old. The case has some very light scuffing but still looks smart and the clasp and hinges are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each cake fork is 12.5cm / 4.9ins long and the serving fork is 14.8cm / 5.8ins long. The set of seven pieces together, uncased, weighs in at a substantial 125g / 4.4oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the undersides of the forks are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letters q for 1933 or r for 1934 and the M & W makers' mark for Mappin & Webb. They also have a registered design number of 764440, reflecting the 1931 date of the original design of the Athenian pattern.
