Art Deco Preserve Pot, George Unite, 1930
This is a stylish Art Deco Cut Glass Preserve Pot with a Sterling Silver lid. The pot is hexagonal in shape with plain slice cut sides and a star cut base. The silver lid has an arched handle, a notch for the jam spoon and a gilded underside. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The preserve pot is made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths George Unite & Sons & Lyde Ltd and dates to 1930. The firm was founded by George Unite and James Hilliard in 1825 becoming George Unite & Sons in 1865. William Lyde became part owner around 1898 and the firm became George Unite & Sons & Lyde Ltd in 1928. They ceased trading in the 1930s.
Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks in the glass, which is of considerable thickness. There is one slight bend in the silver lid plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 90 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The preserve pot is 9.3cm / 3.7ins wide, 5.2cm / 2ins deep and stands 10.1cm / 4ins high to the top of the handle. The silver lid by itself weighs a respectable 34.6g / 1.2oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together the pot weighs in at 414.1g / 14.6oz.
The hallmarks on the side of the lid are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter F for 1930 and the G.U.S & L makers' mark for George Unite & Sons & Lyde Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
