Art Deco Portable Silver Mirror/Compact/Lipstick
This is an attractive and unusual early 20th Century German 835 Grade Silver portable mirror, powder compact and lipstick holder. The head is oval with a scalloped rim overlaying the mirror on one side and an engine turned lid with an attractive Art Deco engraved rim on the other, which opens to reveal the space for a small, ideally oval, powder compact. The lipstick holder is contained inside the handle and has a slider for extending the lipstick from the holder as required.
The portable set is made in Germany by renowned silversmiths Hermann Bauer and dates to around the 1920s / 30s. Hermann Bauer founded his business in Schwabisch Gmund, Germany in 1863, initially as a jeweller. By the 1890s he had moved the firm into the production of small high quality items of silver and this is what the company remains most famous for.
Condition is good with just a couple of small dings in the handle, which are almost inevitable after many years being carried in a handbag. The mirror is in very good condition with no foxing. The slider on the lipstick holder is a little stiff but still working. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
It is 12.8cm / 5ins from the top of the mirror frame to the bottom of the handle, 5.3cm / 2ins across the mirror frame and 1.5cm / 0.6ins deep. It weighs in at 60.4g / 2.1oz.
The bottom of the handle is stamped 835 for 835/1000 grade silver and has the HB in a shield beneath a crown makers' mark for Hermann Bauer.
