Dating back to the late 1800’s, this is a superb example of an increasingly rare antique National cash register. In good working order, it still has all of the buttons for entering the details of the sale, clear displays for both the operator and the customer, a handle to complete the sale and open the cash drawer which has an insert for separating coins and notes of different denominations.

The till casing is highly ornate with a fabulous patina, sitting on a wooden base. This would make a wonderful display item in a retail or hospitality setting, or as a collectors piece or even a quirky addition to a man cave.

The first mechanical cash register was the brainchild of American James Ritty, who wanted to keep track of the transactions being processed in his saloon and to make sure that none of his employees were up to no good. After several modifications were made and patents filed, Ritty sold the company which eventually became National Cash Registers, known as NCR, who became one of leading suppliers of cash registers and computerised tills across the world for many decades.
