Antique Fontaine Figure, French, Bronze, C.1920
This is an antique Jean de la Fontaine figure. A French, bronze statue after Ernest Rancoulet, dating to the early 20th century, circa 1920.
A bronze seated figure of noted fabulist Jean de la Fontaine
Displays a desirable aged patina
Bronze with great weathered appearance
Great detail to the facial features, hair and clothing
Sitting in relaxed pose, posturing as he reads from a book
The pose being striking from several angles
Pleasing weight of 5.69kg (12.5lb)
Inscription to book reads 'Le chêne et le roseau' - The Oak and the Reed
This was adapted into French by de la Fontaine from the fable by Aesop
Signed to the rear as 'Rancoulet'
This is a fascinating antique seated figure in bronze, in the manner of the celebrated French sculptor Ernest Rancoulet. A study of Jean de la Fontaine, the noted fabulist who collected works from around Europe and translated them into French.
