Antique Chinese bronze of a Foo Dog
This is an exquisitely modelled Foo, or Lion, Dog in bronze, probably dating from the early 20th century. It has a wonderful patinated surface.
While most Foo Dogs are depicted as standing or sitting and looking very rigid, this bronze captures the creature in action in an almost humorous way - the animal is lying down with its body curled around and with left front paw scratching the side of its face which is cocked in the direction of the foot. A miniature Foo Dog, which may be a cub, sits on top of the larger Dog's body.
The main Dog's mane and tail are extravagantly depicted as a mass of overlapping tight curls while the rest of the body is decorated with gilded discs from which fine lines spiral. These lines, which simulate the hair in a very stylised way, may have originally been silver coloured and this has subsequently faded and worn.
Dimensions: 18 x 17 x 14 cm high to top of small dog.
Weight: 3.73 kg
Condition: The bronze is in superb condition with a lovely patinated surface.
Postage & Packing: £12 within the UK. Please contact us for a quote to post to an overseas destination.
