Antique Cairo Ware Incense Burner. Ottoman Egypt. Late 19th Century.
OTTOMAN EGYPT MEANING MADE AT THE TIME EGYPT WAS PART OF THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE. CIRCA 1890.
AS THEY ALWAYS ARE,BRASS BODY INLAID WITH COPPER AND SILVER.
THE LID WITH FLORAL INTERLACED TENDRILS,THE BASE WITH THREE INSCRIPTIONS.
SOME OF THESE WARES ARE MORE DESIRABLE THAN OTHERS.
THE KEY IS IN THE INSCRIPTIONS AND THE FUNCTIONALITY.
AS THE 20TH CENTURY PROGRESSED THESE WARES BECAME NOT AS ATTRACTIVE IN THEIR DESIGN AND MOST BECAME RATHER CRUDE AND PLAIN WITH SIMPLE INCISED DECORATION WITH NO INLAY WORK.
THIS IS AN ORIGINAL LATE 19TH CENTURY EXAMPLE NOT A LATE 20TH CENTURY ONE AND CAIRO WARE IS STILL BEING PRODUCED TODAY IN EGYPT OF WHICH MOST OF THE PRICES ARE MORE THAN THESE ANTIQUE ORIGINALS !
