A pair of Japanese Kutani ware miniature bowls Meiji period Japanese Kutani ware %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
An exceptional pair of Japanese Meiji period miniature porcelain Kutani ware bowls, circa 1880

These superb miniature porcelain bowls originate from the Kutani region of Japan dating from the Meiji period circa 1880. They are superb examples of some of their finest workmanship which is rarely available to purchase. This tiny pair of bowls is intricately hand decorated with the interior beautifully painted and gilded with an amazing display of intricate flowers and foliage with a fine scrolling boarder around the rim. The decoration is produced in thin and thick coloured enamels which are highlighted with rich gilding some of which are raised giving an almost three dimensional appearance. The outside of the bowls by contrast is boldly decorated with a traditional scroll and stylised flower broad boarder in rich colours with detailed gilding. These fine porcelain bowls are hand signed on their bases with Japanese character marks. Both pieces are in prestige condition. Japanese circa 1880
