3 x Victorian Silver Spoons, James Deakin, 1899
This is a heavy and good quality set of 3 late Victorian Sterling Silver large teaspoons in the classic Fiddle pattern. The spoons are made in Sheffield by renowned silversmiths James Deakin & Sons and date to 1899. James Deakin & Sons were founded in the mid-1870s and operated from the Sidney Works in Sheffield up until the start of World War II.
These are well made teaspoons of substantial size in a heavy gauge of silver. Teaspoons in the 19th century were generally larger than those we use today. The spoons have the initials "JBW" elegantly engraved at the top of the stem. They are perfectly usable today, either as teaspoons or small dessert spoons, or they would make a good addition to a collection.
Condition of the spoons is good, with no dings, dents or distortion and only the superficial surface wear you would expect after just over 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoons are each 14.1cm / 5.5" long and the set of 3 together weighs a substantial 79.7g / 2.8oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are well struck and very clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the gothic date letter "g" for 1899 and the JD over WD makers' mark for John Deakin & William Deakin of James Deakin & Sons.
